Roles and Responsibilities
A. Financial Accounting and Reporting The Accounting Manager must: 1. Manage the full accounting function of the company. 2. Oversee general ledger processing and ensure transactions are correctly captured. 3. Prepare and review monthly management accounts. 4. Review trial balance, income statement, balance sheet and cash flow reports. 5. Ensure accurate allocation of expenses to departments, sites, projects and cost centres. 6. Review monthly journals, accruals, provisions and reclassifications. 7. Ensure month-end close is completed within agreed deadlines. 8. Review balance sheet reconciliations monthly. 9. Investigate unusual variances, abnormal expenses and incorrect postings. 10. Prepare finance reports for management review. 11. Support budgeting and forecasting processes. 12. Ensure accounting records are complete, accurate and audit ready. B. Accounts Payable / Creditors Management The Accounting Manager must: 1. Supervise the creditors' function. 2. Ensure supplier invoices are matched to approved purchase orders, delivery notes and quotations. 3. Review creditor reconciliations before payment. 4. Ensure supplier payments are properly authorised. 5. Ensure payment runs are accurate, controlled and supported by documentation. 6. Monitor outstanding creditors and aged payables. 7. Resolve supplier account queries. 8. Prevent duplicate payments, incorrect payments and unauthorised payments. 9. Review supplier master data changes. 10. Ensure creditor cut-off is properly managed at month-end. C. Accounts Receivable / Debtors Management The Accounting Manager must: 1. Supervise debtor invoicing and receipting. 2. Ensure customer invoices are accurate and issued on time. 3. Review debtor reconciliations. 4. Monitor overdue customer accounts. 5. Escalate collection risks to management. 6. Ensure customer payments are correctly allocated. 7. Review credit notes and customer adjustments. 8. Report debtor ageing to management. 9. Ensure debtor records are complete and accurate. 10. Support recovery of outstanding amounts where required. D. Bank, Cash Flow and Treasury Support The Accounting Manager must: 1. Review bank reconciliations daily, weekly and monthly. 2. Ensure all receipts and payments are correctly recorded. 3. Monitor unresolved bank reconciliation items. 4. Assist with cash flow forecasting. 5. Report cash flow pressure, unusual transactions or banking risks to management. 6. Ensure petty cash, fuel cards and company cards are properly controlled. 7. Review payment batches before release. 8. Ensure payment controls reduce fraud and error risk. 9. Maintain accurate records of bank transactions. 10. Support management with short-term cash planning. E. Tax and Statutory Compliance The Accounting Manager must: 1. Prepare or review VAT reconciliations. 2. Ensure VAT201 submissions are accurate and submitted on time. 3. Ensure PAYE, UIF and SDL reconciliations are completed where applicable. 4. Review EMP201 and EMP501 information where required. 5. Assist with provisional tax and income tax support schedules. 6. Maintain SARS supporting documents for audits and queries. 7. Respond to SARS queries with proper supporting information. 8. Ensure statutory deadlines are tracked and met. 9. Reduce risk of penalties and interest caused by late or incorrect submissions. 10. Liaise with tax practitioners and auditors where required. F. Payroll Accounting and Reconciliations The Accounting Manager must: 1. Review payroll journals before posting. 2. Reconcile payroll reports to the accounting system. 3. Review salary control accounts. 4. Ensure employee deductions, advances, loans and reimbursements are correctly recorded. 5. Review PAYE, UIF and SDL control accounts. 6. Ensure payroll-related payments are supported and authorise
