Job Description

To assess and evaluate lending applications using sound credit risk and affordability assessments, financial principles and credit policies which will support the bank’s asset book growth and manage credit losses by ensuring that lending credit principles are applied, and that lending is within the Bank’s risk appetite parameters. Support business partners in understanding and meeting client lending needs and operating in one or more of the segments, as required by business.

Provision of Credit Evaluation Services 

  • Conduct credit evaluation of facilities based on the application for facilities, financial information, market information and in line with the credit policy and procedures.
  • Discuss the credit application with the Customer Consultant, Branch Manager and/or Relationship Manager with a view to understanding the deals motivated and identifying risk management requirements.
  • Make approve/decline decisions on deals within own delegated authority.
  • Recommend approval of appropriate facilities above own delegated authority to the relevant authority.
  • Recommend decline of non -viable deals to the appropriate authority after consultations with the Customer Consultant, Branch Manager and/or Relationship Manager.
  • Present and defend own judgments on credit applications to the appropriate authority.


Risk Management

  • Proactively drive review process of existing facilities, ensure a consistent thorough and timely evaluation of all existing facilities.
  • Review relevant exception and ensure that exposures in excess of credit facilities for BCB names and reported and escalated where required for appropriate approval. Evaluate the excess requests in relation to credit risk parameters.
  • Conduct ongoing credit management to ensure that conditions and covenants are being met when due.
  • Review relevant audit reports on the loading of counterparty (BCB) information (i.e review dates, new risk grades, interest rates, etc) and limits relating to the approved Application For Facilities. Ensure that the above information is always correct and current. Where discrepancies/irregularities are evident, corrective action is to be taken without delay.
  • Detect and evaluate shifts or changes in key risk parameters in a business relationship or industry and evaluate the implication of such changes on continued business dealings.
  • Recommend placing of accounts on watchlist and lock-up where necessary, and the need for provisions.
  • Oversee that adequate provision is held for the accounts in lock up that come through for evaluation.
  • Ensure that the Global Credit Standards, Credit Procedures Manual and Local Credit Policy are adhered to at all times.
  • Ensure (working with Account Management) that accounts identified as problematic are developed with the respective Relationship Manager to ensure that remedial action is taken to regularize the exposure/or escalate them to lock up.

Experience Required

  • At least 5 years banking experience within Credit or Corporate/Business Banking departments.
  • Exposure to the Bank’s lending policies and procedures
  • Exposure to banking procedures/branch experience
  • Previous experience of exercising a personal lending mandate an added advantage.
