Purpose of the Job:
The DUR Pharmacist Assistant assists the drug utilisation review pharmacists manage the financial and clinical risk of contracted medical fund by implementing the policies, protocolsand formularies for reimbursement for medicines. The DUR Pharmacist Assistant will authorise medicines for chronic benefit through the application of formularies and protocols.
Duties and responsibilities
- Review applications for medicine benefits of a medical scheme/fund for eligibility to the specific medicine benefit.
- The DUR pharmacist assistant must assess whether the diagnosis is eligible for re-imbursement according to the Scheme’s/ Fund rules.
- All necessary supportive documentation must be obtained by pharmacist assistant to support eligibility.
- Assess each application for medicine benefits according to the Fund rules that apply to medicines reimbursed from the various medicine benefits available in the Scheme/ Fund.
- Forward the application to the DUR pharmacist of the application if it does not meet the criteria for authorisation.
- Assist beneficiaries identify more appropriate and/or more affordable medicines...
- Recommend to the beneficiary’s doctor all potential changes to the prescribed medicines. Suggest alternatives to the doctor. Be able to substantiate recommended changes if requested.
- All authorisations must be performed in accordance the benefit guidelines, DUR policies and protocols developed and maintained by Universal Care.
- These duties may change from time to time in response to the changing needs and
- Circumstances associated with medicine management in the medical fund environment.
- Authorise the approved medicines per beneficiary using the Chronic Medicine Management software and the authorisations must be completed within the service level response times for the service.
- Communicate with prescribers, dispensing pharmacists and beneficiaries as necessary.
- Provide advice or information as required by Customer service personnel with regards to answering queries about medicine authorisations.
- Maintain knowledge of medicines and keep abreast with changes in treatment guidelines and with pharmaceutical products available in Namibia.
- Provide a medicine management telephonic support service for Chronic medicine management, within the service level response times of the Service level agreements.
- Maintain records of work performed.

Experience and qualifications
- Pharmacist Assistant qualification.
- Registered with Pharmacy Council of Namibia.
- Experience in medicine management an advantage.
- Experience and knowledge of other Chronic diseases an advantage.
- Experience and knowledge of the medical fund environment an advantage.
- Experience and knowledge of the medical fund legislation an advantage.
Language requirements
- English: Primary business language. Be able to speak, write, spell, read and comprehend the language.
- Other languages: The ability to converse in another local language e.g. Afrikaans, Oshiwambo etc. an advantage.
- All written and verbal communication must be conducted in a professional manner.
- Strong verbal and written communications skills.
- Customer service focus.
- Ability to solve problems in a customer friendly manner.
Computer literacy
Proficiency with the following programmes is required:
- MS Word
- MS Excel
- MS Outlook/ email
- MS Explorer/Internet
- Some prior knowledge /experience with medical scheme/fund administration and/or managed care system.
Work Requirments
- The company is based in Namibia, Windhoek
- The hours of work: Office hours are from Mon to Fri, 8am to 5pm.
- Willingness to work longer hours when the business needs require the DUR Pharmacist Assistant to do so is a requirement.
- Confidentiality of all patients’ clinical information and conditions to be maintained and respected.
- The employee may be required to sign a confidentiality agreement.
- Company intellectual property and systems may not be disclosed to external agent or organization.
