Position Summary



 The role requires a highly experienced laboratory professional with strong technical expertise and leadership capabilities to ensure efficient laboratory operations, compliance with regulatory standards, and delivery of accurate and timely diagnostic services.


Academic & Professional Qualifications / Experience Required


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology.
  • Master’s Degree in: Laboratory Management, Microbiology, Pathology, or related field.
  • Registration with the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB).
  • Valid Practicing License.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in management of a hospital laboratory.
  • Strong technical laboratory experience in: Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Histopathology, Blood Bank / Transfusion Services, Quality Management Systems

Knowledge & Compliance


Strong understanding of:ISO 15189 standards, Quality indicators and QMS, Biosafety guidelines, Waste management procedures, Ministry of Health (MOH) regulations, Occupational health & safety standards, CAP / JCI / NABH / NABL standards


Key Roles & Responsibilities


1. Laboratory Operations Management


  • Oversee daily laboratory operations and workflow.
  • Ensure timely processing and reporting of laboratory investigations.
  • Monitor laboratory Turnaround Time (TAT).
  • Coordinate activities across all laboratory sections including:


  • Hematology
  • Clinical Chemistry
  • Microbiology
  • Histopathology
  • Blood Bank
  • Molecular Diagnostics
  • Collaborate effectively with doctors and other hospital departments.


2. Quality Assurance & Compliance


  • Implement and monitor Quality Management Systems (QMS).
  • Ensure compliance with: ISO 15189, MOH regulations, CAP/JCI/NABH standards where applicable
  • Monitor Internal Quality Control (IQC) and External Quality Assurance (EQA) programs.
  • Lead laboratory audits and accreditation activities.
  • Ensure corrective and preventive actions are implemented effectively.


3. Staff Management


  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate laboratory staff.
  • Ensure staff competency assessments and continuous training.
  • Promote teamwork and high-performance culture.


4. Inventory & Procurement Management


  • Manage laboratory inventory, reagents, and consumables.
  • Prevent stock-outs through effective forecasting and procurement planning.
  • Monitor supplier performance and cost efficiency.


5. Equipment & Maintenance Management


  • Ensure proper functioning, calibration, and preventive maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Monitor equipment downtime and coordinate timely repairs.


6. Biosafety & Infection Prevention


  • Ensure adherence to biosafety protocols and infection prevention measures.
  • Oversee laboratory waste management procedures.
  • Promote occupational health and safety compliance.


Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)


  • Laboratory Turnaround Time (TAT), QC/EQA performance scores, Equipment downtime, Incident/error rate, Stock-out frequency, Staff competency compliance, Audit findings closure rate, Patient and clinician satisfaction
