Job Summary

  • The Legal Officer will provide legal and regulatory support across the organization, ensuring compliance with applicable laws, internal policies, and industry regulations.
  • The role involves drafting and reviewing legal documents, managing contracts, advising internal stakeholders, supporting corporate governance activities, managing legal aspects of debt recovery, and mitigating legal risks.
  • The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, proactive, commercially minded, and capable of working effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Draft, review, negotiate, and manage contracts, agreements, and other legal documents.
  • Provide legal advice and support on operational, commercial, employment, regulatory, and corporate governance matters.
  • Ensure organizational compliance with applicable laws, regulations, statutory requirements, and internal policies.
  • Support corporate governance activities, regulatory filings, and statutory compliance.
  • Monitor changes in legislation and advise management on legal implications and business impact.
  • Identify legal risks and recommend appropriate mitigation measures.
  • Support dispute resolution, litigation management, and coordinate with external counsel where necessary.
  • Maintain accurate legal records, contracts, company filings, and documentation.
  • Assist with policy development, review, implementation, and legal awareness initiatives across the organization.
  • Conduct legal research and prepare legal opinions, reports, memoranda, and other advisory documents.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure legal considerations are integrated into business operations.
  • Develop, review, negotiate, and monitor Service Level Agreements SLAs with customers, vendors, and strategic partners.
  • Provide legal oversight for debt management and recovery, including drafting demand notices, negotiating settlements, and supporting recovery actions.
  • Lead legal resolution of long-outstanding and overdue debts while ensuring compliance with applicable debt recovery laws and regulations.
  • Review and improve debt collection, recovery, and escalation processes to optimize efficiency, reduce legal risk, and improve recoveries.
  • Partner with Finance, Collections, and Operations teams to resolve payment disputes, enforce contractual obligations, and strengthen credit control processes.

Key Performance Indicators KPIs

  • Timely review and turnaround of contracts, legal documents, and SLAs.
  • Compliance with regulatory and statutory requirements.
  • Effective identification and mitigation of legal and compliance risks.
  • Recovery rate and resolution of overdue and disputed debts.
  • Timely resolution of legal disputes and debt recovery matters.
  • Accuracy and completeness of legal documentation, filings, and contract records.
  • Responsiveness to internal legal support requests and stakeholder satisfaction.
  • Continuous improvement of legal, collections, and contract management processes.

Requirements
Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Law LL.B..
  • Barrister-at-Law B.L. and qualified to practice in Nigeria.

Experience:

  • 3–5 years of relevant legal experience.
  • Experience in corporate/commercial law, compliance, debt recovery, or regulatory affairs.
  • Experience in the healthcare, technology, logistics, financial services, or startup sector is an advantage.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong knowledge of Nigerian corporate, commercial, and contract law.
  • Knowledge of debt recovery procedures, dispute resolution, and regulatory compliance.
  • Excellent legal drafting, negotiation, and communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • High attention to detail and exceptional organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver within tight deadlines.
  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
  • Strong stakeholder management and relationship-building skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and legal documentation systems.
