Job Summary

  • The Patient Care Assistant provides support to the nursing team in delivering quality patient care.
  • The role involves assisting patients with their daily needs, ensuring their comfort and safety, maintaining a clean care environment, and supporting nurses with routine clinical and non-clinical tasks.
  • The Patient Care Assistant is expected to treat all patients with dignity, compassion, and respect while adhering to the hospital’s policies and standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist patients with personal care activities such as bathing, dressing, grooming, feeding, and toileting when required.
  • Support patients with mobility by helping them walk, reposition in bed, or transfer safely from one location to another.
  • Take and record vital signs as directed by the supervising nurse and report any unusual findings promptly.
  • Observe patients and immediately report any changes in their physical or emotional condition to the nurse in charge.
  • Respond promptly to patients’ calls and requests for assistance.
  • Assist with admitting, transferring, and discharging patients as directed.
  • Prepare patient areas by ensuring beds are clean, properly made, and the environment is tidy and comfortable.
  • Assist nurses during examinations, treatments, and other patient care procedures when required.
  • Transport patients safely within the hospital for investigations, procedures, or between departments.
  • Ensure patient privacy and confidentiality are maintained at all times.
  • Follow infection prevention and control procedures, including proper hand hygiene and the appropriate use of personal protective equipment.
  • Clean and disinfect patient care equipment according to hospital guidelines.
  • Replenish patient care supplies and promptly report shortages.
  • Assist in collecting and transporting specimens as instructed.
  • Maintain accurate records of assigned duties where applicable.
  • Communicate respectfully and professionally with patients, relatives, and other members of the healthcare team.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, training programmes, and other professional development activities.
  • Comply with all hospital policies, safety regulations, and ethical standards.
  • Carry out any other duties assigned by the Nurse Manager or other authorized supervisors.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Senior Secondary School Certificate SSCE.
  • A certificate in Healthcare Assistance, Nursing Assistant, Caregiving, or a related field is an added advantage.
  • Experience in auxiliary nursing is an advantage
  • Previous experience in a hospital or healthcare setting will be an added advantage.
  • Basic Life Support BLS certification is desirable.
