A leading mining and industrial equipment manufacturing company is looking for an experienced R&D Engineer with strong experience in mechanical design, manufacturing processes, and design for manufacturability to join their team in Springs, Gauteng. The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting product development, conducting engineering analyses, maintaining technical documentation, and driving continuous improvement initiatives across manufacturing and production environments. The role requires strong exposure to SolidWorks, GD&T, tolerance analysis, and industrial manufacturing processes within a quality-driven engineering environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct tolerance, stack-up, and fit analyses to ensure compliance with functional and manufacturing requirements

  • Review and validate assembly drawings, weldments, Bills of Materials (BOM), and assembly instructions for accuracy and manufacturability

  • Apply Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles to optimise mechanical designs across machining, casting, welding, and surface treatment processes

  • Maintain revision control and ensure all 3D models and drawings are current using SolidWorks Vault or PDM systems

  • Provide technical support to sales teams, field technicians, and production centres by delivering engineering solutions for non-conformities and derogations

  • Drive continuous improvement by developing and optimising methods, procedures, and processes across production, assembly, and manufacturing projects

  • Support cross-functional teams throughout the production and product lifecycle process

  • Ensure engineering documentation complies with quality and manufacturing standards

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Industrial Engineering

  • 6 – 10 years’ relevant engineering experience within a manufacturing or industrial environment

  • Strong mechanical design experience, with aluminium structures considered advantageous

  • Strong understanding of machining, casting, welding, surface treatments, and manufacturing processes

  • Experience applying DFM and DFA principles in mechanical engineering projects

  • Proficiency in creating 3D and 2D manufacturing drawings using SolidWorks and/or Inventor

  • Experience using Vault/PDM systems for revision control advantageous

  • Strong understanding of GD&T, tolerance analysis, stack-up analysis, and fit analysis

  • Ability to assess the impact of part design and engineering changes across procurement, manufacturing, inventory, quality control, and sales processes

  • Knowledge of ERP systems advantageous

  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 quality management systems advantageous

  • Strong problem-solving and continuous improvement skills

  • Must be based in or willing to work in Springs, Gauteng
