Position: Laboratory Technician (Medical Laboratory Technologist)
Reports to: Medical Director
Location: Kitwe Polytech Hospital, Kitwe

Job Purpose:

Perform laboratory tests to confirm diagnoses and assist clinicians in patient management.

Principal Duties:

• Perform complex tests on clinical specimens and provide reliable results.
• Collect specimens from the required sources for analysis.
• Maintain reagent and consumable stocks to prevent overstocking and shortages.
• Use automated and computerised equipment for multiple tests and carry out routine user maintenance.
• Help train junior staff and medical students.
• Serve as laboratory or section safety officer and ensure adherence to safety guidelines.
• Collect laboratory data and prepare summaries and reports for management.

Responsibilities & Decision Making:

• Observe laboratory safety guidelines and account for resources under the role’s charge.
• Make decisions related to core laboratory work and recognise the effect of errors on patient management.

Education, Experience and Skills:

• Grade 12 School Certificate and Diploma in Biomedical Sciences.
• Ability to write clear English reports and communicate fluently in English.
• Confidentiality, integrity and analytical skills.

Work Environment:

Laboratory and field duties; minimal physical and substantial mental effort, with exposure to infection and laboratory hazards.
