Position: Nurse In-Charge
Reports to: Medical Director
Location: Kitwe Polytech Hospital, Kitwe

Job Purpose:

Supervise and provide nursing services and clinical care to support quality healthcare for patients. (The source job description calls this position “Nursing Sister”; the recruitment title supplied is “Nurse In-Charge”).

Principal Duties:

• Supervise and administer prescribed basic treatment to promote and restore health.
• Provide counselling to staff, patients and relatives to address emotional, social and psychological needs.
• Supervise and provide nursing care to support patient recovery.
• Oversee timely preparation of nursing care plans for clinical decisions.
• Inspect wards regularly to confirm adherence to standards.
• Manage staff and resources in the ward to provide a suitable environment for patient recovery.
• Oversee departmental and individual work plans, monitor performance and supervise ward resources.

Responsibilities & Decision Making:

• Ensure adherence to safety and health requirements.
• Account for resources under the position’s charge and make operational decisions.
• Recognise that negligence or incompetence can endanger patients and disrupt quality care.

Education, Experience and Skills:

• Form V or Grade 12 School Certificate with five (5) O levels, including English, Mathematics and Science or Biology.
• Diploma in Nursing and a certificate in Midwifery, Theatre or Mental Health.
• Five (5) years of post-basic midwifery experience.
• Ability to write comprehensive analytical reports and communicate effectively in English and local languages.
• Computer literacy, public relations, management, counselling and advocacy skills.

Work Environment:

Office and ward work; substantial physical and mental effort, with potential exposure to infectious and communicable diseases.
