Position: Pharmacy Technologist
Reports to: Medical Director
Location: Kitwe Polytech Hospital, Kitwe

Job Purpose:

Assist in preparing, storing, compounding and dispensing medicines in accordance with prescriptions or formulae and the direction of the unit pharmacist.

Principal Duties:

• Manage medicine storage and stock control to maintain pharmaceutical services.
• Prepare, assemble, label, order, store and dispense medicines and pharmaceutical compounds with appropriate instructions for wards, clinics and patients.
• Support the training of pharmacy technologists, technicians and other junior staff.
• Monitor the use of essential medicines and pharmaceuticals to identify needed interventions.

Responsibilities & Decision Making:

• Follow pharmaceutical safety and health requirements.
• Safeguard pharmaceutical equipment, medicines and their quality.
• Manage the withdrawal and destruction of expired medicines within authorised procedures and help address irrational prescribing.
• Prevent shortages and errors that could cause poisoning, death or litigation.

Education, Experience and Skills:

• Full Grade 12 or Form V Cambridge School Certificate.
• Diploma in Pharmacy Technology from a recognised college and professional registration.
• Ability to write clearly in English and communicate fluently in English and local languages.

Work Environment:

Compounding and dispensing areas and field work; substantial physical and mental effort, with potential exposure to chemicals and accidental poisoning.
