Northern Zambia Union Conference (NZUC) serves the mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in northern Zambia. Its health ministry seeks to reflect Christ’s healing work through compassionate, whole-person care, health education and service to communities. Kitwe Polytech Hospital (KTPH) is the Union’s healthcare department serving the community through clinical, nursing, diagnostic, pharmaceutical and oral health services.

Position: Medical Director
Reports to: Board of Directors
Location: Kitwe Polytech Hospital, Kitwe

Purpose of the Role:

Serve as chief executive and senior clinical leader of KTPH, combining direct patient care with strategic, operational, financial and clinical leadership. The Director reports to the Board, consults with the President of NZUC, chairs the Administrative Committee and oversees clinical and non-clinical departments. The role advances high-quality care for the whole person in harmony with Seventh-day Adventist health principles and applicable healthcare requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

• Mission & Adventist Identity: Uphold the institution’s identity as an extension of Christ’s healing ministry, caring for body, mind and spirit. Implement operational practices consistent with Adventist Sabbath observance while ensuring essential and emergency care remains available. Promote healthful living and align operations with Seventh-day Adventist Church policy.
• Clinical Leadership & Patient Care: Maintain an active physician practice providing preventive care, diagnosis and treatment across age groups. Oversee clinical quality, patient safety, evidence-based practice, and mentor clinical staff.
• Governance & Strategy: Principal liaison to the Board, chair Administrative Committee, develop short- and long-term strategic plans, and ensure compliance with HPCZ standards, Ministry of Health requirements, and Zambian law.
• Operations & Departmental Oversight: Organise staff schedules across 7-day operating patterns, oversee Nursing, Radiology, Laboratory, Pharmacy, Reception, and facility maintenance.
• Financial & People Management: Manage operating budgets and financial performance with Finance Department, oversee billing and collections, manage insurer/vendor relationships, lead staff recruitment and development.
• Quality, Compliance & Risk: Monitor clinical outcomes, patient safety measures, quality improvement programmes, and prepare for regulatory inspections.

Qualifications and Experience:

• Medical degree (MBChB or equivalent) from a recognised institution; full HPCZ registration as a medical doctor and current practising certificate.
• Specialisation in Family Medicine (MMed or equivalent) is strongly preferred; Master’s in Healthcare or Business Administration is an advantage.
• At least five (5) years of clinical experience as a physician, including at least two (2) years in a leadership or supervisory role.
• Healthcare administration, clinic management or departmental leadership experience is preferred.

Skills and Personal Attributes:

• Strong clinical competence, leadership, team building, budgeting and revenue management skills.
• Knowledge of Zambian health regulations and HPCZ standards; excellent communication and conflict resolution skills.
• Understanding of and commitment to Adventist health philosophy, whole-person care, integrity, compassion and servant leadership.
• Active member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in good standing.
